We aim to offer all patients a telephone call with a GP within 48 hours of contacting the practice. If you need to be seen you will be offered a face to face appointment that same day.
How to book your telephone appointment
There are 2 ways to book a GP telephone consultation:
1. Book a telephone consultation online up to 24 hours in advance. Telephone consultations are available online from 8am the day before. Visit Patient Access (Click Here) or download the patient access app to book this. The GP will call you within 15 minutes of your chosen time slot. You won’t need to call the practice and you will know exactly when to expect the doctor’s phone call.
2. Call the surgery between 8 am and 10 am on the day you wish to be seen. We advise to call as early as possible to ensure a telephone appointment. You will be phoned back by the GP that same day within a 3-hour time slot.
How to get Online Access
Bring proof of ID into the practice and ask reception to set up online access. You will receive a pin number to register on the patient access website. Once this is set up you will be able to book telephone consultations and request repeat prescriptions online.
Important points when booking your appointment
1. If you think that the GP may need to see you face-to-face please only book your telephone consultation on the day you are available to come in and be seen. This system aims to give you same day access to a GP, in order to do this we need to avoid booking appointments in advance.
2. Book your telephone consultation with your usual GP. If this is not possible try to book with a doctor that you have spoken to before about the current medical problem or seen previously. Seeing the same doctor is the safest way to give you the best care possible. This may mean waiting for a day when your usual GP is available. Reception can let you know which doctor you are assigned to and the days that they currently work or check the staff section of our website. If you book a telephone consultation with a doctor who doesn’t know you and they feel it would be better for you to speak to your own GP they may ask you to re-book.
3. Our receptionists will ask the nature of your medical problem. You do not need to disclose this but if they know the reason for your call they will be able to direct you to the most suitable member of staff. For example, it may be easier to speak to our practice pharmacist for medication issues, to see a nurse for certain problems or to speak to our secretary about a hospital referral or investigation.
4. Ensure you are available to answer the call. The doctor can only try to contact you twice. If you miss both phone calls you will need to re-book your telephone consultation on another day.
5. If all the same day phone calls have gone by the time you contact the practice you will be asked to book an appointment for the following day online (this can be done 24 hours in advance) or to phone at 8am the next day. If you have an urgent medical problem then you can be offered a telephone consultation with our duty doctor. These appointments are reserved for emergency medical problems that cannot wait until the following morning and are triaged by the duty doctor.
6. If you have a query about a hospital referral, a form to be completed or any other administrative query please do not book an appointment with a GP. Contact reception and a member of our administrative team will advise you or complete an online health query HERE.
If you cannot attend an appointment for any reason please inform us as soon as possible in order for us to give the slot to someone else.
Why have we changed the appointment system?
We changed our appointment system as patients were waiting several weeks for a routine appointment with a GP and were often having to come into the practice for things that could easily have been sorted out over the phone. Our new system enables most patients to have a telephone consultation with a GP on the day they contact the practice. If you need to be seen the GP will book you a face to face appointment that same day.
Using this system we are able to offer a lot more appointments each day and current feedback suggests that patients are now finding it much easier to speak to their doctor and to be seen on the day they want to be seen.
